The HUMMER H1

The HUMMER H1

A car so big, it was wider than some British roads. It was originally an American Military Vehicle. It is the very BIG Hummer H1.

In the 80’s The US Military needed a new vehicle to transport troops and cargo. AM General created a design that could pretty much do anything. It was BIG and boxy, and it had tons of room for storage. There was even a feature to inflate and deflate the tires when you were moving. One reason it was so wide is so that it could slip into tank tracks. That’s just insane.

When AM General made the Humvee they made it for military purposes only. But in 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger saw a Humvee on the road, and he loved it. So he asked AM General to mass produce the Humvee. So, with Arnold’s backing, in 1992 they started to produce the newly renamed Hummer. Mr. Schwarzenegger got the first two, which is really cool.

When the Hummer H1 base model came out in 1992 it had a 6.2L GM Diesel V8. This enormous V8 got about and average of 9.6 miles per gallon. You basically paid more for gas in 2 years than you did for the actual vehicle.

People hated the Hummer for many reasons, but the main one was because of the very bad emissions. In the middle of the the H1’s production GM purchased AM General. GM gave us the very cool H1 Alpha which was a convertible and was a lot faster.

The Hummer H1 was a really cool car, but production ended in 2006. There were two more Hummers, the H2 and H3 that came but they were both really ugly. In 2009 Hummer stopped making cars because of the GM bankruptcy.

These days they are in the works of a new electric Hummer. The teaser pictures look so cool. We are hoping to get this new Hummer by 2022, but let’s just hope it is a good as the old H1 (but with better mileage).
