Legends: The Ferrari F40
There are many cars out there, but there are only a select few special cars that are considered legends. These cars are either really revolutionary or just insane in their own way.
I think that the Ferrari F40 is probably one of the most legendary cars of all time. There is just something about it that we all love. The F40 is one insane car.
The story starts when Ferrari, the great sports car maker, wanted to build a rally car for the notorious Group B Rally. Ferrari just brought out the new 288 GTO, so they decided to use that as the platform for their new rally car. They came up with the 288 GTO Evo, it was a lightweight super powerful road rally car. Just as it came out, however, the Group B event was canceled due to how dangerous it was. The cars were just getting too fast for the stages they had to race on.
So, Ferrari had an amazing race car, but they had nowhere to race it - so Enzo Ferrari decided to make a road-legal version of the 288 GTO Evo. Enzo literally said to his engineers “I want to make the best streetcar ever made.” The body shape of this car was made by an ex Pininfarina designer, and you can tell he spent hours making it look fast and aerodynamic. The wing, in my opinion, is one of the most eye-catching things on this car. The way it fits the body lines is like how a zebra's tail blends into its fur.
It was a true race car for the street - with a stripped interior but included little luxuries and pop-up headlights that made for better airflow over the hood of the car. There are naca ducts (Tri-Angular scoops that go inward that suck the air in for more downforce) literally everywhere on the body of the car. All of these things made it fast, and I mean really fast, at over 200 miles per hour. At the time it was the fastest Ferrari.
I would say the best ever part about the F40 was the engine. A 2.9 liter twin-turbocharged V8 that had one of the godliest sounds of an engine. It’s like a low pitched scream coming straight from a Formula 1 car, there is really nothing quite like the sound that this car makes.
The F40 is a truly legendary car, however, its predecessor definitely didn’t live up to the expectations of the F40. It was not that good looking and it wasn’t even faster than the older car. The F50 just was bland (yes, I did just call a Ferrari bland). The F40 is definitely the most legendary car of all time. There is just nothing, nothing quite like it.
