what we know about the 2022 BRZ/GT86
The BRZ/GT86/FRS was released in 2012 as an entry-level sports car. The world fell in love with its super-sharp handling, its light feel and its 50/50 weight distribution. Even though it only had 200 horsepower, it was one of the greatest drivers cars ever made. It was very similar to a Miata, slow, but a great car to drive.
It has been 8 years since we have a new GT86. So, for 2022 Subaru and Toyota have partnered again to make a new RWD sports car. There are many things we do know and some things we don’t know, but today I will be going over what we know so far about the new 2022 GT86/BRZ.
First, I want to talk about the engine. The current generation has a four-cylinder boxer engine that only produces 205 horsepower. Toyota and Subaru never had the intention to turbocharge the BRZ for many reasons. But this new BRZ/GT86 might just have the same engine as the Subaru Impreza WRX, and that would mean a turbocharged flat-four that will supposedly make 255 horsepower, 50 more than the 2012 car. There have been rumors of an AWD BRZ, but with a little bit of research that would ruin the perfect weight balance, so there will not be an AWD BRZ.
Another rumor that is going around is that the new BRZ/86 will have an STI (Subaru) or GR (Toyota) variant (If you don’t know those are the brand’s performance divisions). With over 300 horsepower. This would be a super fun car with 300 horsepower, because you could drift from the factory! When you pair it to the smooth manual gearbox that the 2012 car has, this car would be the perfect driver’s car.
Depending on how amazing this new 2021 BRZ is, it could be better than the new Supra. Some of the rendered images look way better than the Supra and it will be lighter and have a manual gearbox.
From some of the renderings, my favorite parts about the car are the beautiful LED headlights that have lots of detail and curvature. The upside-down canards also give the new 86 and element of beefiness and anger. They took many design cues from the 2012 car and I think the renders turned out really good, and you never know those renders could be very similar to the production car.
I really think that this new BRZ will be as good, or even better, than the current one. There is nothing like a good old manual RWD low-horsepower sports car, they just drive really well. I just think that the BRZ is an amazing car and this new BRZ is going to be even better. Hey, you never know, we could even get a new Rocket Bunny Wide Body kit too!
Thanks to Car and Driver for the renders
