The First 300+ MPH Car
When Konneggseg took the crown for the fastest car in 2017 with the Agera RS, Bugatti wanted the title back so they made something so bonkers that can’t even be put into words. Bugatti took a 2019 Chiron and did a few upgrades (and by few I mean, a lot) and they called it the Chiron Super Sport, just like it’s predecessor the Veyron Super Sport.
They made some crazy modifications which make this car go insanely fast. And a longer wheelbase makes the car very streamlined when going at high speeds. Also, they have widened the body to get as much air through the car as they can. Plus they made the air vents behind the doors wider to get more air into the engine bay. Michelin even supplied some very strong tires that can stand speeds of up to 300 MPH for five min, They are some of the strongest tires in the world!
The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport has a Quad Turbocharged W16 that makes 1,578 Horsepower which is the same as the Bugatti Divo (which if you didn't already know is the track focused Chiron). The W16 also pushes out 1,180 pound feet of torque. There is actually a fun fact about the Bugatti W16 engine. It's actually from a prototype car called the VW Nardo. VW needed a shorter engine to fit in the Nardo, so they created the W engine. This would later go on to be the engine in most Bugatti’s (and Bently’s). Just in Bugattis' case they added two extra cylinders and new technology into the great engine.
When you look at the front of a Chiron Super Sport you can immediately tell that it is a Bugatti because of its horseshoe shaped grill. But there is something about this Bugatti that makes you think that it looks fast and agile, but weighs over 4,000 pounds it’s a pretty heavy beast. It has lines that can't be matched by any other car and Bugatti themselves said that there are no straight lines on the body of the Chiron Super Sport. Every part on the Bugatti is handcrafted and that's why it looks so beautiful, and fast. One of the things that stands out the most are the two big orange stripes which pop out and making the Super Sport look like it's moving super fast, even while standing still.
Did I mention record breaking! This car can go over 300 miles per hour, and that's a new record. To set the record manufacturers have to do two runs and go as fast as possible on each run and then use the average speed between two numbers to calculate the official speed. Bugatti achieved 304.773 MPH which is not only a world record, but it is the first road legal car to go over 300 MPH. This was a huge achievement for Bugatti, because the previous attempt was with the normal Chiron and that didn't even make the record. It only went 261 MPH, and when the Super Sport did the record it was 26.9 MPH faster then the current record holder at the time, the Koenigsegg Agera RS. So this car is very, very fast.
The way that this car looks and how fast it goes really just makes you think how far car design and engineering have come. Just 33 years ago we made the first car to go 200 MPH and now Bugatti has topped 300 so I must give a huge congratulations to them for making one of the best hypercars ever.
