The Baja car that might save VW gas racing
In November of 2019 VW’s president said that VW would not be competing in any combustion-powered Motorsport. People were shocked because VolksWagon owns Lamborgini, Porsche, Audi, and Ducati which all have big racing teams. This may lead to those teams going electric too.
In 2015 VolksWagon was caught cheating emissions tests with their 2.0L Diesel engines. They had a small system to detect when the car was being tested. This system was found and VW was fined billions of dollars and had to buy many of the cars back to make them have fewer emissions.
Ever since they were caught cheating, VW has been trying to clean up their image. They have been making an all-electric prototype line up (above). No gas-powered Motorsports and an all-electric line up is a very good way to help the world, but it might kill a lot of Motorsports.
You might be saying how does this apply to a Baja truck. Well, this new Baja truck is powered by a turbocharged inline 4. In late 2020 it should race in the Baja 1000. Well, when you think about it, there are no electric cars in the 1000-mile Baja race. So why would VW make a gas powered race truck if they said they would not be competing in any combustion powered Motorsports. My Guess is one man, Tanner Foust.
If you don’t know who Tanner Foust is, he is a professional driver, He does Drifting, Rally, Baja, and many other Motorsports. He is also sponsored by VW, so when VW asked him what he wanted them to build next he said a Baja truck, so VW released this really cool Baja truck at the LA auto show in November.
The only reason this car exists is that Foust didn’t want to have an electric Baja car because they would not have any charging stations in the desert, and it would be heavy. If Foust does well in the Baja 1000 VW might just consider staying with gas-powered motorsports. At least that’s my hope.
