The Great HSV Maloo GTS-R
This car has a truck bed, a big American V8, and it’s rear-wheel-drive so it does insane burnouts. It’s the 2017 Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) Maloo GTS-R. This is truly one of the coolest and most unique cars out there.
The first reason I love this car is that it has an LS style V8 that makes over 583 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. What more could you want? Did I mention that this 6.2 liter V8 is supercharged, that’s mind-blowing. Also because of the big supercharger, this HSV Maloo whines when you rev it up.
The next reason I love this car is that it has a truck bed. There is really no other car like this one. the GTS-R also has a very mean stance and probably some of the best factory wheels I’ve ever seen.
This car is actually a UTE version of the HSV Commodore GTS-R. It has the same engine, wheels, front end, chassis, and many other parts as the Maloo. The Commodore is basically an M3 with more power and Australian touches (i.e. manual gearbox).
There are some downsides to this great UTE though. Firstly, you can’t get one in America, which is kind of funny considering Holden is owned by General Motors. Also, the stereo is a bit crappy and it is insanely expensive at $96,990 USD. But, the base model comes with a manual so that’s good.
The reason HSV made this car is to celebrate 30 years of the Maloo. I honestly think shoving a supercharged V8 and putting an R on the end is the best way to do it. Sadly they only made 600 and they all sold (I can see why).
This year Holden will be shutting its doors, they had nearly 130 years of building cars and honestly built some of the best cars with V8s. This Maloo was their best car though because it was just so weird and unique and that’s why I love it.
