V6 Verses INLINE 6
These two engines have many similarity’s and many differences. They’re both great but which one is better? This is The V6 verses the Inline 6.
If you don’t know, inline engines have all of their cylinders in one line. V engines are engines with an equal amount of cylinders on each side that are positioned in a slant, making them look like a V. V engines were created in 1888. They were put into the first ever car created by Daimler Benz. The Inline engine was created in 1911 and were a lot more powerful and reliable than the V engines in the 20’s and 30’s.
V engines have a lot of history but where they really shined was in the JDM car scene. Pretty much every cool JDM car has an Inline 6. For example, Supras, R34’s, R33’s, R32’s. There are many other cars that have the inline 6, like the BMW E92 M3 or the TVR Tuscan Speed 6. But if you look at most Inline 6 cars today, there are only four manufactures that make them. These companies are Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, and BMW.
But you may be asking, why are there not many Inline 6 cars on the road. Well, most manufacturers think that the V6 is a better option. First It is lighter, makes power quicker, and is smaller. Pretty much every car enthusiast will agree with me that they love the inline 6, but we might not see them much longer because the V6 is making a big comeback.
The V6 engine only started popping into cars in the late ’60s but they weren’t that popular. It wasn’t until the ’90s that car companies started to see the potential in V6’s. Nissan produced one of the most revolutionary V6’s in 1990 with there 300zx, it had a Twin-Turbocharged V6 called the VG30DeTT. Other brands saw a great opportunity in the V6. Many cars that had V8’s or Inline 6’s switched to the V6 layout.
The reason car manufacturers like these engines so much is because they are light, make power a lot more smoothly and quickly, and they are smaller. Also, the V6 does not vibrate as much as the Inline 6 because it has pistons that fire at the same time to make the engine run smoothly.
Car Manufactures Try to fit the engine into as many cars as they can to save money. But with an Inline 6, you can do that because they are long so they need a big engine bay. But with the V6 Companies share the same V6 for many different cars because it is Cheaper and Smaller than an Inline 6.
Mercedes made a good attempt at a smooth-running, fuel-efficient cheap Inline 6 but it is still too expensive. So we might not see any new Inline 6’s because V6’s are probably the best engines today. So I think that the V6 is a better engine, although it may not be the obvious choice that’s the way it is.
RIP Inline 6?
